  • Salary: EUR 3183.62 gross monthly, plus benefits (including: flexible working hours, presence in the Brussels office with some teleworking from Belgium possible, additional leave days for family care, transport to the office covered in Belgium, complementary pension support, 13th month and holiday allowance, lunch vouchers, training budget)

About the role

The Communications and Media Officer co-leads the production of EDRi’s narrative content for specific audiences and channels (website, social media, mail, publications, press). 

The new colleague will be responsible for creating communications content together with another Communications and media Officer – covering jointly EDRi campaign and policy topics.

In addition, the role contributes to EDRi’s strategic engagement with press and other media, and leads the coordination of broader communications projects. 

We are looking for an individual that will bring strong drafting and editing skills and a creative mindset that can switch communication style according to channel and audience.  

The successful candidate will further have strong project management and organisational skills, as well as the ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with a network of journalists.

Within the communications and campaigns team, the new colleague will work with 5 peers , in close collaboration with the policy colleagues leading on specific files, as well as with the broader EDRi team and EDRi members.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Press and media: 

  • Draft and edit press releases, quotes, EDRi op-eds, letter to editors, and other materials
  • Manage media inquiries, secure EDRi coverage in leading press outlets ;
  • Maintain and expand a robust network of media contacts and relationships in collaboration with EDRi colleagues and members.

Website, mail and social media:

  • Edit content for EDRi’s website and the EDRi-gram bi-monthly newsletter;
  • Draft channel-specific content for EDRi’s social media channels, EDRi’s mailing lists of supporters and EDRi – administered websites (main websites, campaign websites)
  • Oversee the content – editing of EDRi’s publications;

Communication projects and events:

  • Coordinate the production of the EDRi annual report or other publications;
  • Lead other communication projects/events when relevant
  • Coordinate with other colleagues in the EDRi team and network on relevant communication projects to ensure narrative consistency.

Narrative strategy:

  • Implement EDRi’s communications, campaigns and media engagement strategy 
  • Contribute to strategic discussions on EDRi branding, positioning and partnerships. 

Required Skills:

  • Drafting skills: Channels / audience specific, based on pre-set advocacy objectives
  • Excellent written and spoken English 
  • Editing skills: proof-reading, language check, logic structure 
  • Project management skills

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Knowledge of communication styles and form adapted to explain complex human rights issues to various channels: website, mail and social media
  •  Experience in journalism, communications, media relations, public relations or related field; 
  •  Minimum 1 year of relevant experience in a civil society organisation or in a professional context;
  •  Interest in human rights and EU affairs, in particular privacy, surveillance and law enforcement, freedom of expression, as well as other digital rights issues;
  •  Experience working in a membership organisation or in coordinating movements for social change, including working with activists and volunteers is an advantage; 
  • Knowledge of another European language is an advantage;
