The EDRi Office has a key role in supporting and servicing EDRi member organisations, facilitating knowledge-sharing, organising events and creating opportunities for meetings and networking. The Office is also the operational focal point in governance matters. EDRi needs strong EDRi member organisations to make progress towards our overall vision. The commitment and passion of volunteers and activists must go hand in hand with capacity-building, support and care to sustain our efforts. Good governance principles and processes allow for a healthy and inclusive network, a prerequisite for effective and sustainable impact. The network should maintain its unique technical expertise and include other necessary skills, as well as reflect the lived experience of all people in Europe.

The Membership and Community Officer will work closely with the Community Coordinator, the Executive Director and other colleagues to support, service and coordinate EDRi members, build capacity and knowledge-sharing programmes, contribute to events (content and logistics) and to connections with broader coalitions.

We are looking for an individual experienced in membership development, movement building and knowledge-sharing that will bring good organisational and people skills to the membership and community team.


The successful candidate will contribute to the work of the network team in close collaboration with the EDRi team and EDRi members in the following areas:


  • Maintain and create knowledge-sharing tools including EDRi Wiki
  • Lead EDRi knowledge-sharing and documentation strategy
  • Develop toolkits, manuals and tools for EDRi members
  • Contribute to internal EDRi communication

Network development

  • Support management of EDRi members, affiliates and observers
  • Plan, develop and implement capacity-building strategy for EDRi members
  • Research and answer to EDRi members needs and requests

Events management and coalition building

  • Contribute to content and logistical aspects of EDRi events including workshops, panels, the annual Privacy Camp and other conferences
  • Support EDRi team with coalition building events and activities

Governance activities

  • Support EDRi governance mechanisms including Board and members working groups
  • Contribute to the General Assembly planning and coordination together with EDRi members


  • Excellent organisational skills and good project-management skills
  • Coordination and multi-tasking skills
  • Coalition building skills and building a community of action
  • Strong written and spoken English skills


  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience in a civil society organisation or in a similar role in a professional context;
  • Interest in human rights, in particular privacy, surveillance and law enforcement, freedom of expression, as well as other internet policy issues;
  • Experience in knowledge-sharing and documentation of change processes;
  • Interest in organisational and network development;
  • Experience in membership organisation or in coordinating movements for social change, including working with activists and volunteers;
  • Excellent people skills including active listening, empathy and understanding for lived experiences of activists in the human rights field;
  • Knowledge of another European language is an advantage;
  • Knowledge of Wikis, database management systems, mailing list and free and open software is an advantage.
