About Mnemonic

Mnemonic is a non-profit organisation made up of human rights advocates, archivists, technologists, and open-source investigators dedicated to preserving, memorialising and adding value to publicly available information related to human rights violations. We use our unique position as a cross-sectorial, cross-disciplinary organisation to help human rights defenders hold power to account. Mnemonic is uniquely suited to conduct investigative journalism work in the Middle East and North Africa and to understand the needs of emerging independent media, balanced with lack of resources and myriad challenges in their operating environments. Mnemonic aims to: 1) Archive digital information to ensure that potential evidence is not lost and remains accessible and usable for future accountability mechanisms. 2) Train human rights defenders to maximize the impact of digital information and empower those working with it. 3) Reduce the impact of harmful content moderation policies by social media companies and governments by providing comprehensive, reliable data surrounding the takedowns of human rights documentation on social media platforms. 4) Build and support the development of open source tools and methods to increase human rights defenders’ capacity to use digital information to advance social justice.
