STOP spying on air travellers!

STOP spying on air travellers!

By EDRi · July 13, 2015

On 15 July, the European Parliament will make an important decision on your right to privacy.

The EU Commission wants to collect, store and transfer all your air passenger data (including meal preferences, the form of payment, medical information etc.) for flights arriving in or leaving the EU. The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) of the EU Parliament is expected to vote on the adoption of this blanket surveillance measure.

Take action now!

Ask your representatives to support Amendments 48 or 49 to reject this proposal! Make your voice heard and communicate your concerns to your elected representatives by calling or sending them an email.

You can find the contact details of all Parliamentarians of the lead Committee here.
You should focus our efforts on these political groups: S&D, EPP and ECR
However, feel free to contact these other political groups as well
in order to make sure they will vote to defend your privacy: EFDD, ALDE, Greens/EFA and GUE/NGL.

In addition, you can also contact journalists, write blog posts and tweet (add #PNR or #NoPNR in your tweet).

Act now to protect your personal data!

What are the main problems with this proposal?

  • The measure proposes blanket data retention and an excessive storage period.
  • All citizens flying in and out of the EU are targeted.
  • There is no evidence that the retention of air passenger data works to fight against terrorism.
  • The Court of Justice of the EU ruled in 2014 that suspicionless storage of personal data as provided for in the Data Retention Directive was illegal.
  • Lack of proportionality: The Fundamental Rights Agency, the European Data Protection Supervisor, and the Article 29 Working party (most recently here) agree on the lack of proportionality of the proposal.
