The European Commission is soon to launch the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) which aims to lay down rules for the independence of media regulators, promote transparency of media ownership and recognise that editorial decisions should be free from interference. This initiative is set to complement the Digital Services Act that puts foreword rules to regulate online platforms.

EDRi and our members Homo Digitalis, Access Now, EFN, Vrijschrift, and Državljan D are calling on the European Commissioners Vestager, Jourová and Breton to dismiss the ‘media exemption’ in the EMFA.

Keeping the media exemption in the EMFA will jeopardise efforts to contain disinformation, illegal content and war propaganda on online platforms. Additionally, this may open the door to undemocratic practices like state-controlled media and censorship.
