EDRi Organises European Activist Barcamp and Safari on Threats to Citizens’ Privacy Rights (13-15 May)

EDRi is pleased to announce a Barcamp and Safari to address the imminent threats to privacy rights in the EU posed by many of the amendments to the Proposal for Data Protection Regulation currently before the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) Committee of the European Parliament.

On Monday, 13 May, 8:30am

On Tuesday-Wednesday, 14-15 May, all day

At Monday’s event, Mr. Paul Nemitz, Director, Fundamental rights and Union citizenship, European Commission, will deliver the introductory speech followed by Ralf Bendrath, Senior Policy Adviser to Jan Philipp Albrecht, MEP and Rapporteur on the “General Data Protection Regulation” in the LIBE Committee.

Mr. Bendrath will provide an overview of the current status of the Proposal for Data Protection Regulation.

Janneke Slöetjes of Bits of Freedom will provide an overview of the amendments which threaten to severely weaken privacy rights in the EU. Ms. Slöetjes will focus primarily on the issues of consent, profiling, purpose limitation, legitimate interest and pseudonymous data. To conclude, experts/activists will take part in Safari workshops in preparation for their scheduled meetings with Members of the European Parliament.
