Welcoming new EDRi members: FSFE, Hermes Center, NOYB, and Xnet
We are proud to announce that the EDRi network has grown again, and we would like to warmly welcome the four new members: Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE), Hermes Center for Transparency and Digital Human Rights, NOYB, and Xnet. European Digital Rights has now 39 members in 19 countries.
Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) empowers users to control technology. It helps individuals and organisations to understand how free software contributes to freedom, transparency, and self-determination. Free software gives everybody the rights to use, understand, adapt and share software, thus supporting the fundamental freedoms like freedom of speech, press and privacy.
Hermes Center for Transparency and Digital Human Rights promotes the awareneess to transparancy and accountability by supporting and developing free software with the purpose of increasing the freedom of speech online, supporting and developing the whistleblowing free-software solution “GlobaLeaks” aimed at private and public organisation, supporting the development and promotion of the Tor2web project and the TOR network, and supporting the development and management of the LeakDirectory website.
noyb uses best practices from consumer rights groups, privacy activists, hackers, and legal tech initiatives and merge them into a stable European enforcement platform. Together with the many new enforcement possibilities under the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), noyb will be able to bring privacy cases [where?] in a much more effective way than before. In addition, noyb will follow the idea of targeted and strategic litigation to maximize the impact on the future of your right to privacy. When appropriate, noyb will use PR and media initiatives to ensure your right to privacy without even going to court. Finally, noyb is designed to join forces with existing organisations, resources and structures to maximise impact, while avoiding parallel structures.
Xnet is an activist project working in fields related to digital rights and democracy: freedom of expression, net neutrality, privacy; the free circulation of culture, knowledge and information, mechanisms for transparency, participation and citizen control of power and institution, the defense of citizen journalism for the right to know, inform and be informed, the technical, communications and legal fight against corruption; and the technopolitics understood as the practice of networking and taking action for citizen empowerment, justice and social transformation.
