By EDRi · July 10, 2025

Summer is looming large before us and the out-of-office replies are getting more frequent than ever. Despite this, the news from the digital rights world in Europe shows no signs of stopping. This is our last EDRigram before the summer break, but before you start to miss us too much, we have a hefty edition for you to sink your teeth into.

The EU’s deregulation spree is, unfortunately, still keeping us up at night. This week, we’re pushing back against this relentless agenda which is threatening to unravel two crucial laws that protect our fundamental rights – the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act. Read about our efforts in this edition.

Need something to look forward to after the summer? Privacy Camp, your favourite digital rights gathering in Europe, is back. Call for session proposals is now open. Submit your session proposal by 21 July, 09.00 AM CEST if you’re keen to be a part of the programme. How else can you participate? We open registrations to attend next week. Stay tuned and sign up to the Privacy Camp newsletter for updates.

If you will miss us over the summer and enjoy the digital rights news, analysis and recommendations we bring to your inbox, show us some love by supporting the EDRigram with a donation! We’ll see you back in September.

Security or surveillance? Climate activism under watch in France

Are We Europe Podcast

In this three-part podcast series of Are We Europe, host Seden Anlar explores how technology and political rhetoric are restricting civic space in France and across the EU. From facial recognition to AI surveillance and social media monitoring, digital tools are increasingly used to curb dissent and limit public freedoms, measures often framed as necessary for “security.”

In the first episode, activists from Les Soulèvements de la Terre, a movement the French government attempted to dissolve and labelled as “eco-terrorist”, share their experiences on the front lines of protest and state repression. Don’t miss it!
