It would be an understatement to say that we are living through unprecedented times – from wars, to severe humanitarian crisis, rising fascism and surveillance, and more. Despair and apathy feel easier than ever at a time when we should be standing in solidarity with those affected, building resilience, and working towards more hopeful futures. How do we counter this? For the EDRi network, our 2025-2030 network strategy – adopted in May 2025 at our General Assembly in Paris – will serve as a north-star to guide us during this time, and keep us focused on protecting and promoting digital rights.
Earlier this month, we addressed a critical issue endangering our democracy and the rights of journalists, human rights defenders, activists, and more – spyware. We launched our position paper on states’ abuse of spyware where we came to an important conclusion: the only approach that is compliant with human rights, democracy and the rule of law is a full ban on spyware and the commercial spyware market. Now, we’re recommending EU lawmakers to finally take some action.
Lastly, your favourite digital rights gathering is back – Privacy Camp 2025 will take place on 30 September 2025! Every year, our flagship event brings together over 300 digital rights advocates, activists as well as academics and policy-makers from all around Europe and beyond to discuss the most pressing issues facing human rights online. We’ll be announcing the Call for Panels soon with guidelines on the theme for this year, but if you already want to start planning your submission, think along the lines of: connecting across borders, care and collective rights, deregulation, militarisation and securitisation, academic and civil society repression, privacy and data protection, and new and old tactics. Stay tuned for more updates, and we can’t wait to see you in the fall!
