Tens of thousands across Europe urge EU decision-makers to centre people, the planet and democracy in digital futures
On 1 October, EDRi and 41 other civil society partners hosted the Tech and Society Summit in Brussels. This event brought together civil society organisations and EU decision-makers to discuss some of the most pressing issues at the intersection of technology, society and the planet.
During the Summit, we took the demands of thousands of people across Europe to seven Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). Over 40,000 people supported our recent petitions, together with our partner WeMove Europe, calling on EU decision-makers to put people, democracy and the planet at the heart of our digital futures. It was also co-signed by more than 30 civil society organisations working on a broad range of issues – from climate justice and racial justice to corporate accountability.
The petition urged lawmakers to support a vision for futures where technology empowers us all to flourish, prioritises caring for planet, makes decision-making just and accountable, puts our safety and participation first, and works for our propserity.
The delivery
The petition signatures were accepted by MEPs Saskia Bricmont (Greens/EFA, Belgium), Anna Cavazzini (Greens/EFA, Germany), Raquel García Hermida-van der Walle (Renew, The Netherlands), Alexandra Geese (Greens/EFA, Germany), Cynthia Ní Mhurchú (Renew, Ireland), Vladimir Prebilič (Greens/EFA, Slovenia), and Kim van Sparrentak (Greens/EFA, The Netherlands). We are very grateful to the participating MEPs for showing their commitment to building a future that empowers its communities, uplifts the voice of its citizens, nurtures its natural environment, holds tech corporations to account and protects the human rights of all its people.
Though this event marks the official end of our petition, we will continue to echo demands for digital policies that respect people, democracy and the planet to all decision-makers throughout their coming mandates.
