Policy Statement on article 17 of the proposed European Media Freedom Act
EDRi and our members Access Now, ApTI, Article 19, Citizen D, EFF, EFN, IT-Politisk Forening, Panoptykon, Vrijschrift, Wikimedia Germany alongside other organisations are calling to reject Article 17 in its current form altogether in the EMFA.
The European Commission launched the European Freedom Act (EMFA) which seeks to protect the function of journalism and media outlets. This regulation is proposing a new mechanism to identify media service providers based on self-declaration and giving all media providers special treatment to moderate online content on very large online platforms.
EDRi and our members Access Now, ApTI, Article 19, Citizen D, EFF, EFN, IT-Politisk Forening, Panoptykon, Vrijschrift, Wikimedia Germany alongside other organisations are calling to reject Article 17 in its current form altogether in the EMFA.
Keeping this article could not only facilitate the spread of disinformation throughout the Internet but also undermine the effectiveness of the Digital Service Act by fragmenting recently approved in the European Union.
