Prioritising planet care: A vision for our digital future
Together, we can protect human rights, strengthen democracy, and reshape societal systems. Read about our commitment to empowering people to flourish and thrive, as part of our Vision for 2024 and beyond.
This blog is part of a series of publications looking into EDRi’s manifesto for positive digital futures. Read the rest of the series here.
What do we mean when we say we want to develop a collective vision for our digital futures? Here is what we can do to ensure that our technology prioritises planet care:
- Acknowledging that technology production is interconnected with living beings and nature and ensuring our economies and societies respect the planet’s limits.
- Incorporating the values of the circular economy, where goods, including technology, are built to last, and we maintain our rights to repair, tinker, and build.
- Building sufficiency and sustainability frameworks that prioritize de-growth, meeting our needs within planetary boundaries, and reparations for the Global South, in the Global North.
- Collectively respecting and protecting land and territories of Indigenous Communities and in the periphery that hold cultural, ecological, or historical significance.
In our manifesto, we suggest clear policy recommendations to make this vision a reality. With the new policy-makers taking their seats in the European Union institutions, we urge you to join us in influencing them to commit to building digital laws that centre planet care. Join us in our demands now by signing the petition.
