RIPE 85 Student Event: Understanding the Internet

RIPE 85 invite students to join them for this virtual session to better understand how the Internet works with leading experts Bert Hubert, Vesna Manojlovic and Mirjam Kühne. 4 October 2022, 17:00 - 18:30 CEST

Bert Hubert: Who controls the Internet?

“So who controls the Internet? We all have our dreams, our hopes, our heroes on the Internet, but also our favourite enemies of the Internet.”
Bert Hubert, the founder of PowerDNS, will dive into what he means by controlling the Internet, and who he thinks runs it, and what it means to be a network engineer.

Vesna Manojlovic: Equity, Ethics and the Environmental Sustainability of the Internet

“Thirty years ago, when I first started studying and using computer networks, I believed that “the Internet” was the solution to many of the worlds problems. Mid-way, I started wondering if the Internet is actually part of the problem! Since then, my work has been focused on increasing JEDI in technical communities; making ethical decisions; decreasing the environmental impact.”
Vesna will highlight some of the discussions in the Internet and technical communities on JEDI and sustainability, and of course, wants to hear from you about how you see the future of the Internet!

Mirjam Kühne: Can you run the Internet?

And finally – how can you participate in running the Internet?
Mirjam Kühne, RIPE Chair, will introduce the RIPE community and its role in running the Internet, and the bottom-up policy development process used, and most importantly – what your role in it could be!
