EU AI Act needs clear safeguards for AI systems for military and national security purposes

EDRi affiliate ECNL presents the second set of their proposals on exemptions and exclusions of AI used for military and national security purposes from the AIA, also endorsed by European Digital Rights (EDRi), Access Now, AlgorithmWatch, ARTICLE 19, Electronic Frontier Finland (EFFI), Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) and Panoptykon Foundation.

The deterrent effect of the Julian Hessenthaler case: Criminal prosecution must not lead to diminished freedom of opinion

At the start of the trial against security adviser Julian Hessenthaler, who played a key role in the making of the so-called Ibiza video, 15 Austrian and international human rights organisations express their concern that his excessive criminal prosecution could – intentionally – have a deterring effect on future sources or whistleblowers and the exercise of freedom of opinion, freedom of the press and freedom of information. Julian Hessenthaler has been in custody since the end of 2020 (at first awaiting extradition, now awaiting trial) because of drug- and document-related charges against him.

Between policy and reality: EDRi’s assessment of the implementation challenges in the troubled Terrorist Content Online Regulation

Since its enactment nearly two years ago, the so-called ‘Terrorist Content Online Regulation’ has faced scrutiny over its implementation and effectiveness. The EDRI network has contributed insights to the European Commission's Call for Evidence for its evaluation. We expressed significant concerns regarding potential violations of fundamental rights and the efficacy of its enforcement measures, advocating for the withdrawal of the regulation in favour of one that genuinely guarantees respect for fundamental rights.
