Celebrating a strong European Parliament stance on AI in law enforcement

On 5 October, following a significant push from across civil society, the European Parliament voted to adopt an important new report on Artificial intelligence in criminal law and its use by the police and judicial authorities in criminal matters by a promising majority of 377 votes in favour, to 248 against. This followed a tense vote earlier as a majority of MEPs opposed all four attempts from the European People's Party (EPP) to remove key fundamental rights provisions from the report.

New win against biometric mass surveillance in Germany

In November 2020, reporters at Netzpolitik.org revealed that the city of Karlsruhe wanted to establish a smart video surveillance system in the city centre. The plan involved an AI system that would analyse the behaviour of passers-by and automatically identify conspicuous behaviour. After the intervention of EDRi-member CCC the project was buried in May 2021.

The #PaperBagSociety challenge

The #PaperBagSociety is a social media challenge part of the #ReclaimYourFace campaign that invites everyone to share online the impact of living life with a paperbag on the head. With it, we aim to raise awareness of how ridiculous is to avoid facial recognition technologies in public spaces and why we need to build an alternative future, free from biometric mass surveillance.

Challenge against Clearview AI in Europe

This legal challenge relates to complaints filed with 5 European data protection authorities against Clearview AI, Inc. ("Clearview"), a facial recognition technology company building a gigantic database of faces.

When the police’s IT-systems are not in order, everyone loses

Without the trust of citizens, the police cannot do their job properly. That is why it is important that the police are extremely careful with citizens' data. But an analysis by EDRi member Bits of Freedom shows that of all 36 'mission critical' systems of the police, not one complies with the rules on privacy and information security.

If AI is the problem, is debiasing the solution?

The development and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) in all areas of public life have raised many concerns about the harmful consequences on society, in particular the impact on marginalised communities. EDRi's latest report "Beyond Debiasing: Regulating AI and its Inequalities", authored by Agathe Balayn and Dr. Seda Gürses,* argues that policymakers must tackle the root causes of the power imbalances caused by the pervasive use of AI systems. In promoting technical ‘debiasing’ as the main solution to AI driven structural inequality, we risk vastly underestimating the scale of the social, economic and political problems AI systems can inflict.

Internal market MEPs wrestle with how to fix Commission’s CSAR proposal

The European Union’s proposed CSA Regulation (Regulation laying down rules to prevent and combat child sexual abuse) is one of the most controversial and misguided European internet laws that we at EDRi have seen. Whilst aiming to protect children, this proposed law from the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, would obliterate privacy, security and free expression for everyone online.
