On March 13, following years of tireless advocacy, the EU Parliament finally passed the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act. But there’s not much to celebrate – the law missed the mark when it comes to protecting our human rights, especially those of migrants and people on the move. On the same day, the Parliament also passed the European Media Freedom Law (EMFA) which aims to protect journalists and media workers. Another legislation with lofty ambitions that did not live up to its goals. Despite the Brussels spyware scandal that shocked up in February 2024, EU’s approach to surveillance technology remains lackadaisical at best. What will finally convince them to take action?

UK: European Court decision in Big Brother Watch case does not go far enough to protect free expression and privacy

The finding of a violation is testimony to the doggedness of civil society in holding the UK government to account in the wake of the Snowden revelations about mass surveillance programmes. EDRI's member ARTICLE 19 welcomes the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (European Court) in Big Brother and others vs the UK, which ruled that the United Kingdom’s bulk interception of communications violated the right to privacy and failed to protect journalists in breach of the right to freedom of expression.

Austria’s biggest privacy scandal: residential addresses made public

Nobody took data protection into account for the so-called “Supplementary Register for Other Concerned Parties” (Ergänzungsregister für sonstige Betroffene). The Ministry for the Economy and the Finance Ministry are responsible for a data breach to which the Austrian Economic Chambers were an accomplice.

French deputies must reject online censorship without a judge in one hour

On 9 February 2022, the Law Commission of the French National Assembly discussed the bill concerning the "dissemination of terrorist content online", transposing the European regulation on terrorist content online into French law. European Digital Rights (EDRi) and EDRi’s members La Quadrature du Net and Wikimedia France sent the following letter to the members of this Commission to call for the rejection of the bill prior to the discussion.
